Chuma Xian (Shamanic Spirit Mediumship in Chinese Folk Tradition)

In Chinese shamanic and folk spiritual traditions, there exists a unique practice known as Chuma Xian (出马仙). Literally meaning “immortals who go forth on duty”, it refers to deities or spirit guides who choose to work through a human medium, assisting them in offering guidance, healing, and divination to others.

This tradition is rooted in Northeast Chinese shamanism, where spiritual practitioners act as bridges between the human and the spirit world. A person called by the spirits may undergo initiation, and once they accept the role, the Chuma Xian spirits are believed to empower them with abilities such as:

• Healing and protection rituals

• Feng Shui and energy alignment practices

• Spiritual communication and ancestral guidance
